5 super easy steps to make the Dalgona candy from 'Squid Game'

Unless you've been living under a rock for the past week, you'll be fully aware of the craze surrounding the latest Korean offering on Netflix.

In the twisted survival drama Squid Game, 456 individuals on the brink of financial ruin must compete in a series of children's games to stay alive, and perhaps win the grand prize of 4.56 billion won, which is roughly the same as US$38 million.

While viewers all over the world have been in raptures regarding the storyline and concept of the show as a whole, some of the more food-loving bunch on the internet have been focusing on the subject of interest in the show's second game – an unassuming piece of candy.

In the second game, participants having to carefully separate a shape (such as a circle, a star, or even an umbrella) outlined on the caramelized sugar candy – also known as a "dalgona cookie" in South Korea – handed to each one of them.

To make things interesting, the participants need to perform the task without the actual shape being broken, with failure resulting in the death of the participant. Talk about an extremely high-stakes children's game.

Obviously, many of the show's viewers were intrigued by the confectionery, and immediately wanted to find out more about the treat – which has since been revealed as something of a local favorite among Korean children.

How is it made?

Responding to demand, a number of foodie influencers took it upon themselves to reveal the candy's method of preparation – which, as it turns out, is surprisingly simple.

The candy only contains two ingredients – sugar and baking soda, and the steps are as follows:

1. Simply heat a tablespoon of sugar in a ladle over a high flame until it melts and begins to caramelize. Be sure to stir regularly to avoid burning the mixture.

2. Add a small pinch of baking soda to the mix and stir quickly.

3. Once both ingredients are mixed well and all gooey, the mixture is then poured onto a sheet of baking paper.

4. Use a shape mould (it can be any shape you like) to impress a shape onto the slowly hardening mixture.

5. Let the candy harden and enjoy your treat. Or you can also try separating the shape from the cookie without the risk of getting shot.
