One can say that the Indonesian entertainment industry is self-sustaining. This is partly due to the country's large population, thus a bigger local audience by default.
But aside from size, the creative industry in general has flourished in Indonesia, producing blockbuster films, as well as independent cult-classics. With online streaming platforms like Netflix, the reach that Indonesian productions have previously enjoyed has now sky-rocketed, thanks to global ease-of-access.
Netflix recently announced its latest slate of made-in-Indonesia titles, including works from familiar names such as Joko Anwar, Raditya Dika, and Angga Dwimas Sasongko. Expect familiar themes with stories told through an Indonesian point of view.
Here are 7 Indonesian titles coming to Netflix soon.
1. The Big 4.

Directed by Timo Tjahjanto, The Big 4 follows a by-the-book detective as she investigates the death of her father, following a clue that leads her to a mysterious island. Once there, she soon discovers that her late dad actually lead a double life, revealing him to be the leader of a group of assassins.
2. Dear David.
Having a fantasy blog on the side is a great way to let off some steam as you imagine a perfect utopia in which you're the main character. However, for straight-A student Laras, her fantasy blog could pose as the downfall of her social reputation as it gets exposed to the entire school.
3. Hari Ini Akan Kita Ceritakan Nanti (Today We’ll Talk About That Day).

Acting as a prequel to Nanti Kita Cerita Tentang Hari Ini (Later We'll Talk About Today), the film follows Narendra and Ajeng as they navigate through the hurdles of life, dealing with their own differences, as they fall in love.
4. Klub Kecanduan Mantan (Ex-Addicts Club).

Having to deal with a breakup is extremely difficult. It's made even worse when you've got no one to talk to about how you're feeling. Realizing this, five individuals struggling with their own breakups come together to form their own unique support group.
5. Komedi Kacau (Comedy Chaos).

In the middle of a bad luck streak, Panca has to deal with the difficulties that come with owning a comedy club, as well as juggle his work-life balance with a wife in the picture.
6. Gadis Kretek.

Cutting between the past and the present, Gadis Kretek is set against the backdrop of Indonesia's cigarette industry, which is closely intertwined with the country's history itself. The story follows a cigarette mogul's estranged son as he goes on a quest to fulfil his dying father's last wish – to search for Jeng Yah, a young woman from his past. As the search goes on, past pains have to be confronted and long-buried family secrets end up being unearthed.
7. Nightmares and Daydreams.

As the series' name implies, the show follows ordinary people as they encounter strange phenomena in sci-fi-thriller fashion.
