Looks like Rosmah Mansor is set to join her husband, former Malaysian prime minister Najib Razak, behind bars.
The Malaysian High Court found the former first lady guilty of three counts of corruption on September 1, 2022.
The 70-year-old was implicated in a RM1.2 billion (US$27 million) solar hybrid corruption scandal involving 369 rural schools in the Malaysian state of Sarawak.
Similar to Najib, who made history as Malaysia's first former prime minister to go behind bars after he too was found guilty for a separate corruption scandal involving SRC International, Rosmah is set to face 10 years of imprisonment.
23 witnesses were called up to testify during the 40-day-long trial.
In response to the sentencing, a tearful Rosmah said that she was a victim, claiming innocence.
"I am a victim... you want us to suffer, we have suffered. I am telling you this. Look at me as a woman and be compassionate," New Straits Times quoted Rosmah as saying.
When lead prosecutor Datuk Seri Gopal Sri Ram urged the court to give her a heavy sentence due to Rosmah's offence, she was heard remarking, "Might as well kill me."
However, it is reported that Rosmah will be filing an appeal to the Malaysian Court of Appeal, and possibly the Federal Court, if she is unsuccessful in overturning the High Court's verdict.
For Najib and Rosmah's critics, it'll probably take another two years to see her behind bars if we are to use her husband's trial as a benchmark.
