Every year, OnePlus releases two phones: Their base flagship model and a 'T' variant of the base device. Based on their track record, the company would normally implement minor adjustments to the 'T' variant.
This time, they went all out and one might consider the OnePlus 6T to be a new phone on its own.
Powerful specs as expected.
OnePlus has the tendency of equipping their phones with the latest and greatest specs, from its processor all the way to its screen. The camera might not perform as well as other flagships out there, but what they lack in their cameras, they make up tenfold on their specs.
The OnePlus 6T comes with a Snapdragon 845 processor, up to 8GB of RAM and up to 256GB of internal storage. The company has finally opted for a larger battery and the device now comes with a 3,700mAh battery, a decent improvement over the OnePlus 6 which came with a 3,300mAh battery.
It also comes with a 6.41-inch Optic AMOLED 'waterdrop' notch display and Android 9 out-of-the-box.
Future of smartphone biometrics sacrifices the headphone jack.
OnePlus has always been praised for their quick and accurate fingerprint sensor as well as their face unlock feature. However, with the OnePlus 6T, the company has removed any signs of the fingerprint sensor and went with an in-display fingerprint sensor, similar to the Vivo NEX.
In turn, they had to remove the headphone jack, a feature that all OnePlus users and fans would look forward to when the company releases a new phone.
Peter Lau, CEO and co-founder of OnePlus believes that it is worth removing the headphone jack in favour of the in-display fingerprint sensor. In an interview with CNET, he said, “After you experience the Screen Unlock you’ll fall in love with it,” he said. “[You’ll] realize that it’s the experience that you wanted.”
However, even after removing the headphone jack, the phone still does not have an IP water resistant rating.
It is also worth noting that even if the Vivo NEX does not have an IP water resistant rating as well, it has a full-body display, an in-display fingerprint sensor, a selfie camera that slides out and they still managed to retain a headphone jack with all that hardware.
Same cameras, new features.
The 6T comes with a 16MP+20MP sensors on the back and the front houses a 16MP sensor position in the notch. The camera sensors might not be an improvement from its predecessor, but the company has added some neat features to the camera software.
The first, is what the company is calling, "Nightscape". The feature allows you to capture low-light urban environments with improved clarity, less noise, more accurate color reproduction and better dynamic range.
The second feature is Studio Lighting and if it sounds familiar, that's because its the company's take on the iPhone's Portrait Lighting. It can detect faces and adjust the lighting accordingly.
Still one of the best priced phones out there.
